Repairing IE When Uninstall and Upgrading Doesn't Work

You don't realise how Windows is crippled when Internet Explorer is broken until it happens. I first noticed that Quickbooks Navigator windows had no menus. Then I noticed that System Restore was blank, and Search was blank. IE no longer executed javascript or ActiveX, so no Windows Update, that was blank too. IE 7 beta wouldn't install, IE 6 wouldn't install, wouldn't repair, wouldn't even uninstall. After hours of fighting it I had accepted that it might take a full reinstall of XP. But then I tried something which had popped up an error that I hadn't gotten, Runtime Error 429....ActiveX cannot .....

A quick google search led me to this site, Macropool. I was grasping at straws, so I followed their instructions and downloaded the MDAC repair tool. Ran that, no change at that point so on to the next step, Windows Script. I ended up at Microsoft's Download site searching for it there, Windows Script 5.6

Download and Run and all my problems sorted. That's what I get for messing around in the Windows Registry to start with. I hope this helps someone else who might be having the same issues.

Open Source Help Desk: PMOS

I tested most of the php/mysql open source support desk systems, several perl versions, and a few of the commercial products as well. I was not impressed, until I found PMOS Help Desk. It is by far superior to anything I've tested, and in fact have installed it here.PMOS supports multiple departments, notifying those staff that are members of the department requested on the ticket. It supports custom fields, automatic email processing, and has a knowledge base section. One of my personal favourite features that is a huge benefit to a small web based company website, sms notification of new tickets and replies. How convenient to get a text message on your mobile that a customer or potential customer has submitted a helpdesk ticket!

If one is like me and has a mobile service that does not provide an email address for text messages, you can always subscribe to PumaSMS, an email to sms service for £10 per year plus sms charges of approximately 10p per message. Value for money for the truly mobile office.

Horse's Mouth: CMS - the minefield of Choices

At Horse's Mouth: CMS - the minefield of Choices, Cait made a comment suggesting http://www.opensourcecms.com/ for evaluating open source (free) content management tools.

She suggested it to me quite a long time ago, and I have revisited it to try out various products. What's great about this site is that you can log in to each of the installations as admin and really get a good feel for the backend and configuration options, then being able to make a more informed choice of which one might work best for you.

It's a big sandbox really, one that is regularly reset, with a countdown clock in the corner to let you know how long you have until the system reverts everything back to fresh installation data.

Completing the WT site

This is a fresh installation of NucleusCMS with a few plugins and a customized template. A great place to start things off.

The WT site has been under construction for a long time, because it has not been a priority. We've have current clients by word of mouth and their needs and business has been most important. However, as we are undertaking a large project in the role of sponsors, it became a sudden urgency to finish our site! There are, however, just a couple more sections to finish, over the next few days it should be complete.
